Meaning of Sargi in Karwa Chauth Vrat
Before the daughter-in-law begins her fasting, the pre-dawn meal comes from the mother-in-law, known as sargi. Cooked food, dried fruits, sweets, diya, matri, dahi, etc. are included.
How is Karwa Chauth Celebrated
Married women dress up like a bride on this day and apply mehendi to honor the bond with their husbands. They begin the fast with sunrise and until the moon is visible in the evening. They do not even consume water or food during the day.
They recite stories in the evening about the religious significance of Karwa Chauth and pray. They break the fast when the moon appears by offering water to the moon first and then to their husbands. The husbands in return offer their wives water and a sweet to break their fast.
As a sign of love and happiness, married women receive gifts from their in-laws and husbands. This day often calls for numerous celebrations, including get-togethers.
The Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha
According to legend, a man named Vedsharma and his wife Leelavati lived a peaceful marital life. They had seven sons and a daughter called Veeravati. The daughter was the family’s favorite. She had to observe Karwa Chauth after her marriage. She had to face a lot of trouble during the day when she was without food and water. Due to the extreme conditions, Veeravati fainted. tHer brothers were greatly affected by their sister’s plight and made a scheme to trick their sister into breaking the fast before the rising of the moon.
The brothers climbed a tree with a torch. As Veeravati acquired consciousness, her brother told her that the moon had risen. She was asked to go and break her fast up.
She saw a lantern as she stepped on the terrace, which she thought it was the moon. As she was about to take her fourth bite, she got the news of her husband’s death. Veeravati inconsolably cried. It is said that when she was weeping, Goddess Indrani appeared and told her that without giving argha (offering to the moon), she had broken the fast and that is why her husband died.
The goddess also gave her a solution to the matter and said her husband would come to life if she holds this vrat every month. Veeravati followed the rituals and, with utmost devotion, did the fast. As a consequence, her husband came back to life.
